A new beginning in Germany

On September 17th, I stepped into a country I had never visited before: Germany. I didn’t know it then, but it would soon feel far from foreign. Thanks to the wonderful support of the Aktion West-Ost team, my first days were incredibly smooth. They helped me with everything I could need and did their best to make my transition to the office and to my new role as easy as possible.

Settling Into the Office

My very first day at the office welcomed me with sweet gifts from Alex and delicious muffins by Heike. Adapting to a new job can be challenging, but with such kindness around me, everything felt manageable. After a few weeks, our team gathered for the BAS II meeting, my first chance to meet the Board and other AKWO members in person. I felt lucky to meet everyone so early on.

This meeting also helped me understand Aktion West-Ost more deeply. As a team, we exchanged many ideas. I started planning new ways to activate our social media presence, creating designs, and organizing our content. At the same time, I continued handling my daily responsibilities and preparing for the upcoming Christmas period.

Welcome Training at Walberberg

Then came the time for my ESC Welcome Training. From November 10th to 16th, 2025, I stayed at Jugendakademie Walberberg. To be honest, I hadn’t expected it to be such an eye-opening and transformative experience. Meeting 20 other volunteers from different parts of Germany, people who felt and thought so similarly to me made me feel understood and supported.

I realized I wasn’t alone on this journey; we were all walking similar paths and sharing similar emotions. I learned more about my rights and responsibilities, felt grateful many times, and once again understood how lucky I am to be part of AKWO.

Throughout the seminar, we explored topics such as Germany’s historical background, the European system, conflict management, and the concept of solidarity. Each session opened a new window in my mind.

This is how the first months of my ESC adventure have passed. Full of learning, growth, and connection. I’m excited to update this space soon with new achievements and stories.

With love,

Nerma
